Kenyan Culture

Other Considerations

  • Consider the attire you are wearing if you are visiting a home or a religious building. Singlets with thin straps that expose your shoulders, skirts that sit above the knee or being shirtless are sometimes considered too revealing in Kenya.
  • Kenya is host to large populations of people that have been permanently displaced from surrounding nations (e.g. Somalia, South Sudan) – often living in refugee camps for multiple years (sometimes decades). Therefore, consider that many people who list their birthplace as Kenya may be refugees that identify with a different nationality. It is also important to recognise that not all Somalis are refugees. For instance, the northeastern region of Kenya is home to a large population of Somalis.
