Iraqi Culture

Other Considerations

  • Iraqis may have a familiarity with war, violence and oppressive authority, and some undertook 3 years of compulsory military service under Saddam Hussein's regime.
  • Iraqis tend to give a great deal of detail about their job and family when first meeting someone and will often stress the achievements of their family. This is not a justification or deflection so much as a validation of their family’s honour (a core value in Arab culture).
  • Iraqis are prone to taking any testimony that you will try to do something as a promise. Therefore, when you are asked to do them a favour, be careful that you either keep your word or are very noncommittal.
  • On all days of the week, Muslims reserve a time in the early morning, midday, afternoon, after sunset and night time to pray.
